What does it cost to install an EV charger at home?
Short answer
A home EV charger in Kent costs from £1,200 including VAT (£1,000 ex VAT) supplied and installed, for a 7kW smart charger with up to 15m of cable. That price should include the charger, a dedicated circuit with its own protection, DNO notification, full testing and certification. It rises if you need a fuse board upgrade, a long or buried cable run, or a supply to a detached garage, and a proper installer prices those separately before you commit, not on install day.
What the price should include
A quote worth trusting covers all of this:
- The charger itself, usually a 7kW smart unit
- A survey, from photographs or a visit
- A check of your fuse board and earthing arrangement before the quote is fixed
- Cable, clipped or contained neatly, for a standard run
- A dedicated circuit with its own protection, as the regulations require
- DNO notification to the network operator
- Testing, an electrical installation certificate, and scheme registration
- Setting up the charger app with you before the installer leaves
If any of those are missing from a written quote, ask why.
Why the range is a range
Three things move the number.
The charger. Tethered units cost a little more than socket-only. Load balancing and solar integration cost more again.
The cable run. Our prices include up to 15m of cable, and clipped cable beyond that is £18 a metre ex VAT. Ten metres along a wall is straightforward. Thirty metres round the back of the house, through a cavity, or under a driveway is not.
The board. If your consumer unit has no spare way, or lacks the right protection, it needs work first. This is the single most common reason a cheap headline price grows.
The headline price problem
The most common complaint about EV charger installation is not the price, it is the surprise.
A very low advertised figure usually assumes the simplest possible install: modern board with a spare way, short surface run, no earthing complications. Anything else becomes an extra on the day, when you have already committed and the van is outside.
The fix is simple. Get the survey done first, and get every extra priced in writing before you accept. A price that can only go up is not a price.
Earthing, and why it comes up
EV charging has specific earthing requirements because you are standing outside holding a connected appliance. Depending on your supply type, an installer either fits a device that disconnects on a fault, or installs an earth rod.
You do not need to understand the detail. You do need the installer to have looked at your supply arrangement before quoting, because it affects both the method and the price.
Grants
The main grant for houses with off-street parking closed some time ago. Support still exists for flats, rented property and households without a driveway, and the rules change, so check the current government position rather than trusting an installer who is vague about it.
Getting a price from us
Send a few photographs of your fuse board, your meter, and where you would like the charger. That is enough for an exact quote in most cases, and the quote is free either way.
